Guw'aadzi Hauba!
(Hello Everyone)
The Keresan language is the traditional language of the people of the Pueblo of Acoma and the Pueblo of Laguna. It is also known as the Keres language. The Keresan language is unique to a few New Mexico Pueblos. The Pueblo of Laguna and Pueblo of Acoma speak the western version of this language. There are other pueblos that speak the Eastern version of this language such as San Felipe, Zia, Santo Domingo, Santa Ana and Cochiti all of which are in alignment with the Rio Grande River. This website is using the western version of the Keresan language; all these Pueblos speak the same language but they speak it in different tones and different dialects. Both versions of the language have been passed down from our ancestors, grandparents, parents and now to us. The languages are very sacred and we are risk of losing them. As new parents, it is now our responsibility to learn our languages and to continue to teach them to our children. The Keresan language is not a language that comes in the written form. Through the Pueblo of Acoma the language is only written through how it is pronunciated. - Mother Sandra Chavez
